Apocalypse Now Intro (The Doors - The End)

This is the opening to the war film Apocalypse now.

The conventions of the war genre are:

  • A massive war
  • Large scale battles
  • Almost always set in a the past in a well known war
  • A significant amount of special effects
The start of the trailer uses high key lighting to show a very natural and peaceful scene. This was used to show a contrast for when there is a huge explosion covering everything in flames, this symbolises the peaceful land being disrupted very suddenly by a bloody war.

Eventually you can see the main characters face in the background of the scene, he is upside-down which could symbolise that he is confused or unwell, when there is a helicopter this emphasises these feelings and adds anger.

The music at the very beginning seems quite peaceful to match what is going on, but when there is an explosions the singing starts, and though it is peaceful still, the words symbolise death and destruction creating opposing feelings and confusion.

From this opening i expect to see allot of fighting and allot of emotions from the characters as what is shown is  more deep and meaningful than you may expect from this type of film.

It is hard to say the exact audience this film is attracting as it shows it will have allot of action, to attract mostly men and teenagers but it also shows it will have alot of emotions and a deep story which would only attract an older audience.
